"Flyaway hair" has new meaning this summer as women flock to feathered hair extensions, from subtle to brazenly wild. While celebs like Miley Cyrus and Steven Tyler pioneered the look, the trend has taken on mass appeal. Teens are wearing them, but -- surprise -- so are their moms, maybe even their grandmothers. In an extension of the extensions craze, women and a few intrepid men are trimming their tresses with tinsel, crystals, charms and, most of all, feathers. Since Steven Tyler took the boho look to the masses on American Idol, a spectrum of stars have festooned their coifs with snakey rooster feathers, from plumage pioneer (and now regular) Ke$ha to Roseanne Barr on Greta Van Susteren's Fox show last week to Kathie Lee Gifford, who tried out the trend on Today in June, to Tori Spelling, who earlier this month extolled the plumes' virtues on her blog. She got them and so did her two kids. In his five years of working the industry trade show circuit, Professional Beauty Association spokesman Brad Masterson says he has "never seen anything jump as quickly as hair feathers have." The association put the organic ornaments on its top-10 hot list in January and they've "been gangbusters" since, Masterson says.

"The interesting thing is that a real trend like this doesn't come across that often," says Amy Synnott-D'Annibale, In Style beauty director. "Women are always looking for different ways to express themselves through their hair, and there's only so many things you can do."
